Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stated that the European Union (EU) is supporting extremist groups, including al-Nusra and ISIS "from the very beginning," while speaking during an interview with Belgian broadcaster Vlaamse Radio- en Televisieomroep (VRT) in Damascus, in footage released on Monday.
"The EU is supporting the terrorists in Syria from the very beginning, under the different titles, humanitarians, moderate and so on. Actually, they were supporting al-Nusra and ISIS from the very beginning, they were extremists from the very beginning, so they cannot destroy and build at the same time," stated Assad.
The Syrian President added that many people in the region "believe that the Europeans don't exist politically, that they only follow the master, which are the Americans," adding that "the Europeans will follow and will implement what the Americans want."
Assad met with a European delegation, headed by Member of the Flemish Parliament Filip Dewinter, in Damascus on the same day, to exchange updated information regarding the current state of affairs in the Syria.
