Die Erforschung und Nutzung des Weltraums ist im Weltraumvertrag (Outer Space Treaty) von 1967 geregelt. Darin ist festgehalten, dass das Weltall uns allen gehört, und alle Staaten das Recht haben, das Weltall zu erforschen. Alle Tätigkeiten im Weltall sollen dabei friedlich und zum Wohl der gesamten Menschheit geschehen.
Doch ist dieser 54-jährige Vertrag heute überhaupt noch auf der Höhe der Zeit? Oder ist ein umfassendes Update nötig? Können aktuelle Entwicklungen wie die Militarisierung des Weltraums, zunehmende Gefahren durch Weltraumschrott, immer mehr privatwirtschaftliche Akteure und damit mehr Satelliten in den Orbits sowie aufkommende Fragen zum Ressourcenabbau im Weltraum durch den aktuellen Vertrag ausreichend geregelt werden?

The exploration and use of outer space is governed by the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. It states that outer space belongs to all of us and that all states have the right to explore outer space peacefully.
But is this 54-year-old treaty still up to date today? Or is a comprehensive update necessary? Can current developments such as the militarisation of space, increasing dangers from space debris, more and more private-sector actors and thus more satellites in orbit, as well as emerging questions about resource extraction in space be adequately regulated by the current treaty?
