In 1872, Henry DeBardeleben and his father- in-law, Daniel Pratt, formed a partnership to purchase the Red Mountain Coal and Iron Company, changing the name to Eureka Mining and Transportation Company. In 1873. DeBardeleben sent his mine engineer, Joseph Squire, from the Helena Mines to Red Mountain to rebuild the Oxmoor Furnace, that was destroyed during the Civil War, to find and open iron ore mines and to connect the mines to the furnace using a tramway.

The Eureka #2 mine, featured in this video, was opened in 1873 and operated under the Eureka Company until the 1890s when they merged with TCI, Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. In 1907, US Steel acquired Tennessee Coal and Iron Company and changed the name of the mine from Eureka 2 to Ishkooda 13.

The Ishkooda 13 mine was open until the 1950s with all of the US Steel iron ore mines on the mountain being closed by the 1960s.

On this video, we are uncovering and reopening this mine, not to mine iron ore, but to explore and document this almost 150 year old mine.
